As networks grow by adding more and more optical bandwidth, the number of optical fiber connections is growing at an explosive rate. Reducing operational expenses associated with installing, provisioning and maintaining the embedded fiber plant and especially optical connections is becoming more and more important in today’s competitive carrier landscape.

Our Goal

Enabling the future

Compared to electronics and computers that evolved through miniaturization and integration, not much has changed in telecommunications since the 70's.
The goal of SwIFT is to develop the concept of a compact, multi-port optical switch fabric based on fluidics. By integrating two innovative technologies, Silicon photonics and Fluidics technology, we will be able to deliver a solution that is needed by telecom operators to enable future, flexible and manageable networks, from data centers to core and access networks.

Realisations SwIFT

  • Proof of concept demonstration non-volatile optical switch combining EWOD technology with integrated optics
  • Development of low loss fiber-to-chip edge coupling using specialty fiber
  • 2 x 4 switch demonstrators combining EWOD cells, processed in a photoresist and processed in Silicon Ceramics, bonded to two optical platforms: SOI and SiN
  • Development of an innovative and robust SiCerFlu technology
  • Development of a droplet scanning method for EWOD cells
  • 16 x 16 demonstrator with a hermetic seal bonding of the EWOD SiCerFlu cell to the SOI chip
